Aristotle and his Greek Commentators"},"abstract":" Aristotle\u2019s conception of identity is too large a subject to be \r\nanalyzed in a single article. I will try to discuss here just one of the \r\nmany problems raised by his views on sameness. It is not, perhaps, \r\nthe most stimulating question one could wish to see treated, but it is \r\na question about logic, where I feel a little more at ease than among \r\nthe complicated and obscure riddles of metaphysics. My subject will \r\nbe Aristotle\u2019s references to what is nowadays called \u2018Leibniz\u2019 Law* \r\n(YLL)\u2019)\\ if two objects x and y are the same, they both share all the \r\nsame properties. [...] It is perhaps worth remembering that (LL) must be distinguished \r\nfrom what is normally called the \u2018principle of substitutivity\u2019 (\u2018(SP)*) \r\naccording to which substitution of expressions which are said to be \r\nthe same is truth preserving. As has been shown, (LL) does not \r\nentail (SP), since there are counterexamples to (SP) that do not fal\u00ad\r\nsify (LL).2 Not only (SP), but also (LL), has been doubted by some \r\nmodern logicians. The question is far from being settled and it is \r\nperhaps of interest to examine how ancient logicians tried to manage \r\nthis problem.First, I will consider Aristotle\u2019s statements about (LL) and the \r\nanalyses he gives of some supposed counterexamples to this princi\u00ad\r\nple. Secondly, the interpretations of his view among his Greek com\u00ad\r\nmentators will be taken into account and their distance from the \r\nposition of the master evaluated. As Professor Moraux has taught \r\nus, the study of the Aristotelian tradition often gives us the opportu\u00ad\r\nnity of understanding Aristotle\u2019s own meaning better.
